The act of emptying is followed by an act of taking. He “became flesh” (John 1:14) by taking the form of a bond-servant and being made in the likeness of men. It is no mere coincidence that Paul uses the very same term “form” here that he used in verse 6. Just as Jesus had the form of God in eternity past, so He took the form of a bond-servant in the Incarnation.[8] He who had eternally been served by cherubim and seraphim now takes on the form of a slave so as to serve others!
