Returning with less pace can help you accomplish something that can be even more important. By the time your opponent gets to the ball it will be dropping below the net (or at least dropping). The net rusher will have to hit up on it. Hitting a ball that’s fallen below the net is a lot harder than hitting one that’s above the net.
