The same men who led the Reign of Terror abolished slavery in France. In England, opposition to the slave trade became one of the hallmarks of English Romanticism. Both Turner and Blake were sickened by it and used their artistic skill to portray its horrors. Writers like Shelley, Coleridge, and Wordsworth joined forces with Christian evangelist William Wilberforce to get it outlawed.
