Instead of making human beings happier, commercial society only makes them feel alone and resentful—or to use a term Hegelians would make famous, alienated. We find ourselves in capitalist society like visitors at a banquet. We see the piles of food, magnificent wines, and exotic delicacies: we hardly know where to start. But just as we get close to the buffet table, other people cut in front of us. They already have plates, glasses, and cutlery. Where did they get them? we wonder.
