We must be constantly be aware of ‘the signals we send out’ lest they encourage anti-social behaviour, mislead children or frighten the horses. That is, we must not do anything that will upset things as they are. In short, we are put at the centre of a calculus of probabilities that we are expected to manage: probabilities that not even those who occupy real, rather than purely imaginary positions of management can control.
