Whole neighborhoods have been demolished and “redeveloped” with upscale housing and shopping malls as a means of “revitalizing” the community. Often the federal government subsidizes this operation, with no consideration that the businesses and higher-income people attracted there will simply be transferred from some other place, while the usually lower-income people displaced are also transferred to some other place, with no net benefit to the country as a whole.
