Jesus Christ was crucified as witness to the truth. Sandwiched between the powers of Caiaphas and Pilate this “marginal Jew” refused to place his own self above the truth—and became the Messiah of the world. Why this self-denying refusal in the face of powers that threatened to crush both him and his project?
