Up until a short time ago, people undertaking these jobs still actually believed (and behaved as if) their role was to serve the public, but not any longer. Such old-fashioned values of courtesy and willingness to help have now been replaced increasingly by ‘jobsworths’ who waste no opportunity to flaunt and emphasise their ‘authority’ in any way possible, even on occasions going out of their way to be deliberately awkward or confrontational, resulting of course in extreme frustration which can often flare into anger and sometimes even violence.
