Since genes, like English sentences, contain sequence-specific functional information, multiple changes in the genetic text will inevitably degrade function (or fitness) long before a new functional sequence will arise—just as random changes in a meaningful English sentence will typically destroy meaning long before such changes produce a significantly different meaningful sentence.
