I had no intention of turning into the shell of a man I am today. But I did. And I pay for it every day.”
“There’s those lovely manners,”
She thinks I’ve been with other women.
“I’m tired.” “So am I,” he sighs. “Specifically of you.”
“Up, Gray.” “Make me, Azer.”
Kai doesn’t waste a moment before turning to wrap a hand around my thigh
“Duck, darling.”
It felt like Kai.
He’s asleep.
“I liked you much better when you were asleep,” I say sweetly. “Good to hear you liked me at all.”
“Yes, darling.”
“You were giving him that look like you do.” “What look?” “I’m not quite sure,” he says quietly. “You never gave it to me.”
“So, I would kiss each of her fingers to ‘give’ some of my power to her. She loved it. Made it higher up the wall every day. But she especially loved when I kissed her thumbs, told me it gave her extra strength. So that’s what I did. I kissed her thumbs every day until Kitt helped me bury her.”
I just see you.”
“I’ve never cared enough to kiss someone else’s thumb,” he continues softly. “But my lips found yours that day.”
lifting me onto his boots. “What the hell…?” He grins, flashing both dimples at me. “Let me dance for the both of us.”
“Pretend.”
“He used to dance for me until I fell asleep,” I whisper against his chest. I feel him nod against my hair. “Then we’ll dance until you’re dreaming of him.”
Her head is crushing my arm. And I fear I’d never move again if it meant she stayed beside me.
Despite everything, I struggle to not want her.
“Always trying to get me naked, aren’t you, darling?”
Her smile is sunshine incarnate, warm and bright and blinding.
Pretty boy. Pretty words.
On ripple three, he slides his pinkie beneath mine. By seven, most of our fingers are woven together, tangled in the lush grass.
“You’re okay. I’ve got you.” Concern crinkles his eyes as he looks me over. “I forgot how much shorter you are. Didn’t realize the water had gotten so deep.”
He’s lifting my leg, guiding it until it’s wrapped around his hip.
“You going to kiss me, Gray, or just continue admiring what you see?”
I’m begging you to let me breathe you
I sigh against his mouth when his tongue meets mine.
His teeth pull at my bottom lip.
“Your heart is pounding.” “That tends to happen when you touch me, yes.”
“Let me swim for the both of us.”
At some point, his hand finds mine. He loosely interlocks our fingers,
“You cannot be nothing when you are everything to someone else.”
“Are you okay?” I rub my hands over my eyes, feeling tears tickle my fingers. Then I settle my blank stare on him. “I always find a way to be.”
“You’re not just a mission to me. You’re not just another enemy for me to find. You’re something even more terrifying.” Her voice is little more than a whisper. “And what is that?” “A need.” We stare at each other, both surprised by the words that pushed their way past my lips. Sunlight is streaming through her hair, making her glow like something far too heavenly for me. “I thought you had found your courage,” she says softly. I smile slightly. “Maybe I’m fine with being a fool. So long as it’s for you.”
Because it is then that I understand just how terribly I will hurt anyone who dares hurt him.
“Be careful. For me.”
“I wish I could have done it for you. My soul is already stained enough for the both of us.”
I don’t think before stepping in front of the prince I’m supposed to hate.
“And it feels like you’re undressing me.”
Because, despite it all, I’ve come to realize that there is little I wouldn’t sacrifice for him.
“Cut it off.”
“I want you to cut it off,” I whisper. “Please.” “Hey, look at me,” he says softly, his hand straying to my face. “I will wash your hair, okay? The blood won’t be there forever—”
He sits in silence, washing the blood from my hands.
Seeing her enjoy life makes surviving mine suddenly worth it.
the sound of her laugh is healing, capable of making a man forget his own name, let alone his pain.
