Along with materials essential to the plant’s well-being, metabolic activities in living cells unavoidably create some waste products. When deposited in the heartwood, such substances discolor the tissue. The rich color of naturally stained heartwood from some tree species makes it particularly desirable for the manufacture of fine furniture. The same waste substances also act as chemical toxins that protect fence posts made of heartwood against fungal attack.
