think loving our enemies might be too central to the Gospel—too close to the heart of Jesus—for it to wait until we mean it. I don’t mean it. I didn’t mean it when I shook Pirate Christian’s hand. And my heart, that very place where I found the impulse that I am to love my neighbor and hate my enemy, isn’t going to purify itself any time soon.
