If you have rocked the baby to sleep and want to determine if she can be set down without waking, perform the following tests. [1] Take one of the baby’s arms between your thumb and forefinger. [2] Gently raise the arm two inches. [3] Let go. If the baby’s arm falls to her side and she does not stir, deep or very deep sleep mode has been activated, and the baby can be set down without incident. If she stirs, REM or light sleep mode has been activated, and moving the baby may rouse her.
