In more formal academic research, it is done by calling points of data that don’t fit the model “outliers” and finding a justification for excluding them from the statistical analysis. Both practices seriously limit the usefulness of what is written. It actually is the discovery of phenomena that the existing theory cannot explain that enables researchers to build better theory that is built upon a better classification scheme. We need to do anomaly-seeking research, not anomaly-avoiding research.
