Although they name their key concept “grounded theory,” the book really is about categorization, because that process is so central to the building of valid theory. Their term “substantive theory” is similar to our term “attribute-based categories.” They describe how a knowledge-building community of researchers ultimately succeeds in transforming their understanding into “formal theory,” which we term “circumstance-based categories.”
