there were no TSA guidelines for the size of emotional baggage one could carry. Mine might as well have had a large neon orange HEAVY sticker on it.
“Can angels have heart attacks? O’s blood pressure has got to be through the roof.” “Pretty sure you have to have a heart to have a coronary, so Orion is safe.”
“Murder and marsala, always an excellent pairing for a summer evening,”
“Her name is Inessa, not Voldemort,” I deadpanned.
Like a Saint Bernard puppy on cocaine, whose tail would randomly burst into flames and who would suddenly disappear and then reappear stuck in a cabinet or on the roof or upside down in a tree.
“Well, you know how the saying goes: If at first you don’t succeed…” Maisie sighed, her eyes rolling as she finished, “Try —” But I cut her off. “Destroy any evidence you ever tried until you’re positive you can kick some ass.”
If you hit me again, I will bend you over my knee and repay you in kind.”
“I’m feeling like this little outfit of yours is the damn sexiest thing I’ve ever seen, and it’s begging me to rip it to shreds.”
The air crackled with the static of my magic, and Devanna shivered as a whisper of it ghosted through her. “Eyes on me, hellcat.”
“Or I’ll spin you around right here in this bell tower, rip this sad excuse for pajamas from your body, and fuck you until you’re screaming louder than that damn bell.”
“Begrudgingly befriending you has been the best decision I’ve ever made. No matter how this ends, it has been an honor being your friend and roommate. Thank you for everything. For making me feel alive.”
“How can you help us get back at that chicken-wing Umbridge?” Caedmon tilted his head. “Are you asking what sorts of powers we might have to… Peeves it up?”
Literal fire danced in his eyes, at his fingertips, as he cackled with glee. “Oh, Devanna Rainbow Bailey —” “I told you that in confidence —” “— I thought you’d never ask.”
“No more apologizing for stupid shit. Do men walk around apologizing for being too loud or interrupting women? No. They just bulldoze over us, expecting us to make ourselves smaller to appease their tiny little… egos. Take up space. Be passionate. Be loud.”
“I never said you were. In fact, I think you’re one of the most gifted witches I’ve ever met.”
“Karma most certainly is a witch.”
“Clearly your memory is going, as you know exactly what me humping you from behind feels like. You came for me then too, didn’t you, Devanna?”
“Men always pronounce assertive wrong when they’re talking about women.”
No matter how long I’d hated the male, I… didn’t. Not anymore. Maybe I hadn’t in a long time.
“You are so easy to love, Devanna, just as you are. Your intelligence. Your honesty. Your bravery. Your undying devotion to those you give your heart to. You’re extraordinary in every possible way, shining so bright even when you try to hide yourself away.”
“Because you already haunt all my dreams, all my nightmares, and I shudder to think how your ghost would haunt my waking hours too.”
In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I don’t want just your body. I want you. I don’t do things half-way — you’re in or you’re out, Devanna. I’m not touching you again until you decide.”
And, really, what I hated most was that I didn’t hate him.
You are one hell of a force to be reckoned with, exactly as you are. Allowing people to love you doesn’t make you less. To lean on others doesn’t make you weak. To let others fight beside you, with you, doesn’t mean you’re not capable of fighting for yourself. You don’t need any of us, which makes the fact that you want us that much bigger, more important.”
Because you shine brighter than anyone I’ve ever met. Because my world is dull without you in it and I can’t bear the thought of going back to a life without you at my side.”
