Several days later, Kit and Nimue had followed in their footsteps, Linking their powers in a lifelong bond, then Selene and Ryker, and even Petra and Blaze. I still couldn’t believe the Linking had worked, passing magic to Petra, a human. No one knew the extent of her powers yet, but Blaze had fallen to his knees in a weeping pile of emotion as he clung to her, laughing uncontrollably when she accidentally set fire to his shirt.
But that was the nice thing about baggage. It could be zipped up, shoved in the dark, and never seen until you needed it again. I’d need mine never.
“Curiosity killed the cat,” Blaze said as he crossed his arms, still staring where the cops had turned onto Morgaine’s street. With a mischievous grin, he raised one eyebrow. “Good thing we’re not cats, right?” I shrugged. “I’m very anti-hairball.” “Ditto. So messy. Nothing against cats personally.” “Obviously.” “Wonderful creatures.” “The best.” “Except Bags. Not him.” “He’s just misunderstood,” I said, a touch of defensiveness in my tone I didn’t quite understand. The cat and I were not friends. “Aren’t we all?”
I dismissed her comment, moving closer still. “Now I’m feeling like I need you to shut your damn mouth or I’ll do it for you.”
“Men always pronounce assertive wrong when they’re talking about women.”
Because my world is dull without you in it and I can’t bear the thought of going back to a life without you at my side.”
