Ambiguous and imprecise, shi (pronounced like the affirmative “sure”) has no formulaic translation into English, but rather is defined with a cluster of meanings; among them are potential, disposition, configuration, influence, and, most important to the military theorist, strategic advantage4—which can be extended to positional advantage or advantageous deployment.
