If a strategy does not require grit, then it is aligned with neither the roundabout nor capitalistic progress that got us to where we are today. We mustn’t forget this, and mustn’t allow ourselves to be sidetracked by the sideshows of capitalism (the securities markets)—and rather stand down from that game, and choose for ourselves which game we play.

(I agree with the conclusion of Paul Tough who in his book How Children Succeed, cited research that shows what matters most in a child’s development “is not how much information we can stuff into her brain in the first few years,” but rather noncognitive qualities that include self-control, curiosity, self-confidence, and grit.11To that list I would add, of course, in summary, sisu.)
