I notice it’s the first time she’s called me Cam, and while I like her calling me Fields, this feels different. Warmer.
“You have the dog, and it’s dark. I don’t need your heavy bag slowing you down,” I somewhat lie because although it’s partly true, I also want to do something for her. I want to take care of Aurora Vallacourt, and once I start, there’s no stopping.
“I don’t care about studying. I care about you.”
“I figured you liked chocolate and peanut butter from the cake you loved, so I got you a pint of chocolate peanut butter ice cream. I also got you some ibuprofen and this,” he says, pulling out a plushie cupcake. “It’s a weighted heating pad. My sister has one and swears by it.”
“I didn’t know what you liked, so I got a large with different flavors split into quarters. One quarter is cheese, the other pepperoni and cheese, one is full of veggies, and the other is Hawaiian if you’re into pineapple,” he tells me, opening the lid, the heavenly scent of cheese and dough wafting towards me.
“I know she has some walls up…in certain aspects of her life if you catch my drift. But if you see her, truly see her. Try, okay?” Part of me wants to do my best to jump off this couch and slam her lips shut, while the other part is on the edge of my seat, waiting to hear his response. There’s a short pause until his smooth, deep voice penetrates the silence. “I do see her.”
I fall into step with her, noting how she keeps bringing up the words friends with me. I hate it because I know I don’t want to just be friends with her.
“No, I never stop, if that’s what you were wondering. Still sure you want to be friends with me?” I’m not sure if I only want to be friends with you.
And the truth is that I wanted to stay with Cameron. He makes me feel good, and I want more of that.
“I wanted to try and take this slow, but I don’t know if I can, love. Not after I’ve got my first taste. I want more.”
He has me, more than anyone else ever has.
You could wait ten years to get physically intimate with me, and I’d happily wait because I don’t need that from you. All I need is you.”
I want to ruin her for any other man.
“It’s intense and scary, I get it. But, you have me, Rory. I’m not going anywhere, and we’ll figure it out together,”
“I promise you, Rory. I don’t break my promises. We’re going to make ourselves proud and do it together,”
“Told them what?” “That I want to keep the girl I really, really, like safe, which meant coming to pick her up from her game,” he replies swiftly, his eyes tracing my lips.
“None of my dreams make sense without you in it. You are the dream, Rory.”
