“Junco, Aves 039, please come forward.” I fly over and land next to him. Ashur shadows me and stands behind us. “Junco, as the Fledge captain, it is your responsibility to cull the unsuitable members.” My heart pounds as I look up at him. “Do you understand, Junco?” he asks me kindly and in a low voice. I nod and whisper, “Yes, sir.”

I cut their heads off from behind. The crackle of the plasma through tissue sends tendrils of burning flesh up into the air and I watch as the entire arena wrinkles their collective nose at me. When I get to Isec he’s crying hysterically and I know that if his feet were not stuck to the floor, he’d be running from me like those girls Ashur is forever watching in his horror screens. I step out in front of him, to at least look him in the eyes, but he squeezes them shut, tightly sealed from reality. His tears drop down his cheeks as I remove his head. And then I shut down the SEAR and stick it under my shirt and stand there, looking down at the rumpled heap of bodies and the wide-eyed expressions on the floor. The audience remains quiet and somber until Ashur appears and leads me away and out of sight and then the whispers begin.

Ugh the tears 😭, every time I read these books, I still cry 😭!!
