The question is: How pervasive are the feelings and how long do they last? Meaning, is the sadness, anger, fear, anxiety, loneliness, shyness and so forth temporary and for a good and obvious reason, or is it the water I’m swimming in most of the time? Is it the weather or the climate? To figure that out, it helps to take a look at how often and where we find ourselves stuck.
In adaptive information processing terms, what we’re doing is increasing your access to positive memory networks. These are the networks that have within them the pleasurable experiences you have had in your life.
For instance, the kinds of experiences where you felt calm and relaxed. That way, if you feel disturbed at any time and want to stop, there is immediate access to positive emotions.
It involves guided imagery commonly used in hypnosis and meditation techniques. But with this technique you’ll be totally awake and aware.
Subjective Units of Distress, or SUD, scale. From now on, if I ask you to jot down the SUD level, that’s what it means—how bad it feels, from 0 (no distress) to 10 (extreme distress).

Therefore, it’s important to ask yourself: Is this condition serving me in any way? If it is, that’s an important area to explore.
EMDR therapy is not going to take away a physical condition. For instance, there are thousands of children diagnosed as suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) who are now on medication. If it is indeed an accurate diagnosis, this is an innate neurological condition and EMDR will not take it away. However, many of the symptoms of ADHD are exactly the same as the ones a child can have after a disturbing or traumatic experience.
