Reyna had a protective streak, which came with utter disregard for her own Stone-damned safety. She was an excellent guard. She was a terrible girlfriend.
“Don’t look so smug. That was a mediocre compliment at best.” “Please. All of my compliments are mediocre at best.”
Kianthe sighed. “Sometimes it feels easier to run from my responsibilities, and never stop running.” “What an unfulfilling life that would be,” Reyna said. “All the best things come alongside responsibility.”
Kianthe shrugged. “We’re in love. How hard can it be?” Matild burst into laughter.
“What are you doing here, then? Just came to threaten me?” “Nah, I threaten lots of people. You wouldn’t be high enough on my list to warrant a private visit.”
“That was a charged conversation. Romantically speaking.” “The angriest flirting I’ve ever seen.”
Kianthe smiled. “Dragon magic. Not for the fainthearted.” And ironically, she fainted.
“You want to know what I think?” “No. Because you’re going to spout logic, and I’d rather ruminate, thank you.”
“I guess we have no other option. Venne recognized Matild. He knows she fled the Grand Palace, and he’s going to tell Tilaine if you don’t visit his camp.” “Well, that’s easily fixed,” Reyna said. “If we kill him, he can’t tell anyone else.”
