Laughing, I caught Scarlet by the hips and kissed her, my mouth hot, the rain cool. The storm had chased everyone else away, leaving just the two of us there, lip locked, on the flagstone pathway. When I pulled her body in tight, she groaned.
“Easy, killer.”
“You sexy thing,”
My body was on fire, but at the same time I didn’t want to rush this. This was Scarlet. I wanted to do everything right.
“I’m so glad I wasn’t home schooled.”
“Do you like ice pops?” “Sure?” “That’s all you need to know. Lick it. Suck it. Never use any teeth.”

“She was Hester Prynne. But I just couldn’t do that to myself. Hester is just so… not sexy.”

So, I’d won that battle. And lost the war.
Avoiding somebody was hard work. When she was in the room with me, it was like there just wasn’t enough air for the both of us.
“I need you, Scarlet. Even when things are really ugly. Especially then.”
“What do we owe them?” he asked. “Who?” “The parents who fuck up so badly. How much should we put up with as payment for being born?”
At the edges of my shock, I could feel an oncoming wave of relief. I was having the reverse of a Star Wars moment. Darth Vader had no claim on me.
“I mean, it’s not every day that you find out that you’re your own cousin.”
“You’re the best I ever had, Scarlet. Because I love you. When other people touched me, it felt good. But when you touch me, it feels good and it also means something. And that’s potent.”
“He isn’t very easy to catch, because he’s fast.”
