“Hey, what are you doing with my girl?”
“That so reminds me of Harry Potter,” Brit said, sighing. “I need a reread.”
“We are your friends. It is the law of friendship that you tell us things you don’t want to tell us.”
“Sorry. Sorry. Don’t hit. Bitches be scary when they hit.”
The nest of butterflies had moved on from drinking energy drinks to smoking crack.
“Hey,” Cam said. Turning my head toward him, I raised my brows. “Hi.” “Go out with me.” I smiled. “Shut up, Cam.”
“Don’t run off like that again, okay? I was worried shitless when I couldn’t find you and no one knew where you were.”
apologies were really like wishes. There was an abundance of both in my life, and neither really made a difference.
My brain was telling me this was a bad idea and I told my brain to shut the fuck up, because it rarely told me anything helpful. I took a breath. “Yes.”
Ollie appeared, a cell phone in one hand and Raphael wiggling in the other. “Smile!” he shouted as he snapped a picture on his phone. “It’s like my two kids are going to prom.”
“I think the key to the start of any good relationship is to remember how the other person likes their coffee.”
“You have no idea what you do to me.”
“Fuck, Avery. You think I don’t want you?” His voice came out low, almost a growl. “There’s not a single part of you that I don’t want, you understand? I want to be on you and inside of you. I want you against the wall, on the couch, in your bed, in my bed, and every fucking place I can possibly think of, and trust me, I have a vast imagination when it comes to these kinds of things. Don’t ever doubt that I want you. That is not what this is about.”
“You’re a good guy, Cam.” “No, I’m not.” He exhaled deeply, and his breath was warm against my cheek. “I’m only good with you.”
“I’m serious about you, Avery. If you want me for real, you have me.”
“I could stare at you for a lifetime. It would never grow old.”
Everything was okay. Maybe not perfect, but life wasn’t meant to be perfect. It was messy and sometimes it was a disaster, but there was beauty in the messiness and there could be peace in the disaster.
