“Forget the kid at the grocery,” I say. “If I’m getting a boy toy, I’m getting one like Harvey.” “Old?” “No. Someone that likes to be home, eat cherry pie, and adores me.” “Maybe that’s where I’m going wrong,” she says. “I’ve been looking for abs, money, and no mommy issues.” “Yeah, you need to refocus. Abs are great, but they’re no good if you never get to see them.”
Jack sets Snaps down. Then he reaches out and plucks a lock of hair stuck to my neck. His fingertips dust my skin. They might as well be electrodes. I gasp quietly, my arms breaking out in a flood of goose bumps. He notices. Of course he does. His only acknowledgment of my reaction is a slight smirk kissing his lips. “We did this for twenty years, babe,” he says softly.
“I’m sorry,” I say. “Should I not comment on how hot you look? You’re still my wife, Lo. It’s not like I’m a guy catcalling you from the street.”
It’s pure hell being around a woman you love so fucking much and knowing you’re making her miserable.
We have to. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.
“You trying to pick up my woman, Dad?” Jack walks by me, winking as he passes. “I thought we talked about that.”
From @jackreedauto: I’m so proud of you. You made this? I love you. You’re so beautiful. I blink back a wash of tears and keep scrolling. “Things just might work out, after all.”
