My grandmother has a neutral expression as I rattle on, but then, she’s used to my flights of fancy. She also does about two hundred public engagements a year. She would have had to deal with many other bumbling idiots before. There must be more of us out there.
The rolling countryside of England is so different from California. Everything is so green and fresh. It’s like the grass here is on steroids. One day, I will be the king of this country. I will join an unbroken chain of my ancestors as rulers of this ancient land.
I can handle this. I can follow Jessica around the reserve and ask some questions. It’s totally within my skill set.
“I’m not sure you’re going to find beauty or magic in a cafe tabletop,” I say. “But you never know, right?” He gives me a grin. “That’s the whole point. You never know when the magic will reveal itself.” You never know when the magic will reveal itself.
It’s similar to the philosophy I had when I worked in the insurance call center. Leave every person slightly happier than they were at the beginning of the call. I can apply that same approach to my new job as the Prince of Wales.
But I also realize I don’t have to be an expert on things. It’s about asking people questions and genuinely engaging in the answers.
“I wanted you to see that the people who abuse you online are just people. Sad people, often, because they need to get their social contact from harassing people they don’t know. Would you pay someone like Trevor much attention if he was heckling you in the street?”
The news is often filled with stories of terrible people doing terrible things, but it ignores the silent heroes that walk among us, who make the world better in small ways. But those small ways all add up to making it a world worth living in.
This is what Callum and I do. We animate each other.
Something wordless, deep, and heavy passes between us as our gazes lock together. An acknowledgment of what we are to each other, a soul-level connection which will enable me to sacrifice for him without feeling like I’m sacrificing anything at all.
