WEEKS BEFORE HE DIED, Franklin Roosevelt made repeated personal requests to Stalin to allow the U.S. Army Air Forces permission to evacuate sick and wounded American prisoners of war from Poland. On March 17, 1945, Roosevelt telegrammed once again: “I have information that I consider positive and reliable that there are a very considerable number of sick and injured Americans in hospitals in Poland . . .
