Pippa Hartley is standing in my living room, playing with the dog, and I can’t breathe.
“No.” The word comes out harsher than I mean, but I’m rattled. I can’t fucking think around Pippa Hartley.
“I thought you were gorgeous, too,” he murmurs, looking at me in a way that makes me feel like I can’t breathe. “Even back then.”
“Jamie.” My mouth is quirking into a rueful grin. “This isn’t getting back on the ice. I haven’t performed on stage since high school.” “I remember.”
I sigh and set my hands on his shoulders before he slips my shoe on and buckles the delicate strap.
“You really want to drive the stake into his chest?” I murmur, leaning in and letting my mouth brush her ear. She shudders against me. I wait until she meets my eyes. Christ, her eyes are pretty. “Kiss me,” I tell her.
Every bad thing I’ve ever seen or that has happened to me evaporates into the atmosphere as I kiss her, like she’s filling me with light.
I’m so fucking gone for this girl.
Who better to show her what she’s worth than me, a man who thinks the world of her?
“We agreed not to.” My words are a regretful whisper against his lips, and he breaks the kiss, resting his forehead on mine, breathing hard. “I don’t care.”
“Pippa.” His voice is firm, leaving no wiggle room. “I’d buy you every guitar in the city if I thought you’d let me.”
“Saying thank you feels like not even close to enough. You’re spoiling me.” I run my fingers over his name on the jersey. He shrugs his big shoulders. “So let me spoil you.”
“I have feelings for you, songbird.” My heart pounds, and the rest of the bar falls away. “I like you so fucking much. I don’t want to pretend I don’t anymore.
Telling Pippa how I feel was the best idea I ever had, and flying out to see her is a close second.
“Missed you,” he murmurs against my lips between kisses. “I love coming home to you.”
“I don’t think you understand.” His eyes are steady, warm, kind, and serious. “Anything you want, songbird? It’s yours. Where you’re concerned, money is no object, because making you happy is worth it.”
“Pippa.” He says my name like a prayer, taking me in. He blinks at me like I’m a dream. “You’re so beautiful.”
