Before we were even friends, I had told him that he represented the choice that had been stolen from me. In the end, after everything we had been through, that’s all he would ever be.
“Sometimes the things that seem straightforward are actually the most complicated.”
He wasn’t my match; he was a challenge. One that I was going to win.
“They were given to us shortly before your birth. Onyx was meant for me, and Nova for you.”
“You are devastatingly breathtaking, Ainsley,” he whispered, and I blinked several times at his words. “Anything less is an insult. Don’t settle for anyone who doesn’t value your worth.”
“I will find out who touched you, Ainsley. I will question every single person in this Gods damn kingdom until I am given a name.” I swallowed hard as he approached, the look of destruction and the need for blood on his face. “And if I have to torture it out of them, then so be it. I don’t care if they are innocent; someone will confess. So I will ask you one more time, love.” He leaned forward, his breath caressing my face as he spoke. “Who the fuck did this to you?”
“Keep breathing. Slowly. You’re okay now. You’re safe. I have you.” Nothing had ever felt more true than those words.
“You are not a monster, Ainsley. You are strength and love and vengeance. You took the payment you were owed. Lines to cross do not exist when it comes to avenging those we love or ourselves.”
“It’s like your magic is knocking gently at my door and asking if mine can come out and play with it.”
“So make jokes if you need to, or don’t say anything at all. But know that I see you—I’ve always seen you. I have never once, nor will I ever, take your words lightly or your actions for granted. You mean entirely too much to me,”
“You’re my best friend,” he stated, like it was the only fact in the world that mattered.
For the first time since arriving, I wasn’t afraid of my future because I knew he would be by my side. Whatever storm appeared, we’d weather it together.
“You are my everything—my reason for being. You are what holds me to this world. I don’t want you to go and leave the home you found. I don’t want you to leave me,”
“You are my Soul Bonded, the love of my life, and my Claimed. It’s not just a desire to take care of you; it’s a need.”
“You’re my favorite shade of darkness, love.”
‘For everything we lost and for everything we have yet to gain.’
