“Why are we like this?”—and the longer I live, the more those seem to come up—the psychological explanation is often one of two things: Either the irrationality at hand carries a slightly outdated evolutionary benefit (a cognitive wisdom tooth, if you will), or it’s merely an inconvenient side effect of some other legitimately useful trait (scientists sometimes call this a “spandrel”; the human chin is a physical example).
