earth's axis is what causes seasons. At this time in geologic history the earth is closer to the sun in early January when the northern hemisphere is facing away from the sun. So winter cold in the northern hemisphere isn't as severe. But at other times in geologic history the opposite case occurs. Then the earth is farther from the sun during winter in the northern hemisphere.
