The reporting that I have done around the world since then has had one big theme: the violent division of power that followed the Cold War, and the painful birth of a new world order. It took more than ten years of confusion and false hopes before a pattern began to form after the attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001; it is disorder not order, unstable, increasingly dangerous, and looks as if it will be the global story of the next twenty years, at least.
