The reporting that I have done around the world since then has had one big theme: the violent division of power that followed the Cold War, and the painful birth of a new world order. It took more than ten years of confusion and false hopes before a pattern began to form after the attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001; it is disorder not order, unstable, increasingly dangerous, and looks as if it will be the global story of the next twenty years, at least.

More than four hundred villages that were Palestinian were either populated by Jews or destroyed after Israel was established in 1948. Sometimes the only evidence that a village was there once are clumps of cactus.
