It was written in the boko form of Hausa. The letters were uneven, with thicker lines admonishing certain characters where none was needed. Such simple mistakes would not be tolerated at Chagina, an academy that sought to prove that those of lower castes were as capable with the written word as the high castes.

her eighth Gift Day, Akwokwo showed her one of Tatari’s sole surviving tomes, a present from the Lumumba’s Elder Arbiter, Becktemba. In it, Tatari outlined various codes and cyphers he used to pass messages to his students before and during the war. Creating new codes and cracking them using Tatari’s techniques was a game she and Akwokwo played from midnight to first light if they could.

So much backstory for the sake of it for random info. Doubtless, this info will not be of benefit later. That's the case for so much of the world building so far. There to fill space but it's so specific,to the convo or through# of the monument #can't possibly serve the story later.
