“Why did you think your life was worth less than his?”
“In truth, bird, your cell is the last place I should be, but”—he sighed—“I can’t seem to keep away from you.”
I had to force myself to look down. The dimples. They were killing me.
“I swear he will not live to touch another woman.”
“Are. You. Hurt?”
“Firstly, you may call me Kane. King Ravenwood is a little formal from someone I’ve made blush as many times as you.”
“She’s nothing more than a nuisance.”
“You’re going to have to stop with that term of endearment, bird.”
“Wicked little bird.”
I was furious with the man. So, so furious. But I also wanted to lick his neck. It was complicated.
“Good owl creature. What lovely fangs you have.”
“You are a bright light, Arwen. And he is not worthy of you.”
“Arwen Lily Valondale,” he mused. My name on his lips was like a prayer,
“I don’t believe the lady was finished speaking. You’d be wise to watch your tongue in her presence.”
“And for whatever it’s worth, you were incredible in the forum. As brilliant as you are beautiful.”
“I can’t stomach you hating me forever.”
“How I wish I could stop, bird.”
“Don’t sell yourself so short, bird. I’m never trying to insult you. You have no idea how exceptional I think you are.”
“Arwen.” He turned to face me, his expression one of frustration more than rage. “I am not angry that you planned to leave. I am angry that the imbecile left you behind.”
“It’s only fair. I’ve stared at you. Most of the time, I can’t seem to look at anything else.”
“Truth be told, bird, I only blame myself. I should have known to never threaten someone you care about. You love too fiercely.”
“I want to eradicate him for getting to touch you, let alone kiss you.
“I think I had insulted you.” “Ah, one of the many attractive things you do so well.”
“Why were you in the woods tonight?” He paused. His poor eyes were anguished. “I could have lost you.”
“No, bird. You’re stronger than any of us. It is only you who doesn’t think so.”
“To silence your pain, your suffering. Yes.” He looked at me, eyes clear. “And I’d do it again. A hundred times over.”
“I was wrong that day, to say you thought you were worth less than your brother. You made a heroic choice the night you came here. It took tremendous courage. I have been king a long time, and rarely, if ever, do I see that even from my greatest warriors.”
You don’t need Ryder, or Dagan, or me, or anyone else to take care of you. Remember that. You are enough.”
I had wanted this for so, so long, every minute we were both still fully clothed was a tragedy.
Silly king—as if there could be anyone else.
“Ever since that day we rode back from the woods together, I have thought of little else. Each night I rub myself raw thinking of your long legs, perfect breasts, and gorgeous laugh.”
“I know you said I’m not yours. But . . . I want to be.” I swallowed hard. “I want to be yours, Kane.”
“I thought”—his voice cracked, and my heart stumbled over a beat—“I’d lost you. I couldn’t eat. Sleep. Move.” A sad smile tugged at his lips. “Shave.” He considered me with something akin to awe. “I did not want to live in a world without you in it.”
“Acorn? He’d never hurt anyone.”
“I was willing to sacrifice the entire world to keep you alive!”
