If life was measured by the lessons I’ve learned, I would be immortal. – Khalani Kanes
Whoever first said “there is nowhere to go but up,” lied. Things can always get worse. Always. You can plummet further between those cracks and crevices, because no true rock-bottom exists to halt the descent of misfortune.
Love was like gravity. Pulling and tugging you down to the deepest depths, exposing your core vulnerabilities, ripping barriers apart, and leaving you with nothing but space.

Either accept defeat with smeared eyes Or smile when you encounter death
Emptiness has the fragility of feathers and bears the weight of mountains.
He was a disaster you couldn’t tear your focus away from. He was the unmoving calm while you lean on the precipice of death.
Something about the Captain made her hairs stand on end but also compelled her toward a head-on collision. The darker parts of her enjoyed toying with death. She didn’t mind playing dangerous games and winning deadlier prizes. In fact, she yearned for it. Because it had to end. Some way or another. She needed everything to end.
you don’t realize how tough you are until you need all your strength.”
Give stupid people power, and they’ll abuse it as they see fit.”
She was drowning in seas that didn’t exist and living a life that was no longer hers.
The truth is, it’s not the hurt you see that’s dangerous. It’s the hurt you hide that’s the real menace.
Not because there’s no way out. Hopelessness because you’ve already seen the way out, and the way out was worse.
Humanity escaped fiery terror above and thought they would find solace below, but it only brought us closer to hell.
She was the prisoner in a house of bars, and he held the key.
Reading was like sucking in a gulp of air after holding your breath for a lifetime.
That’s the beauty of knowledge. If it’s remembered, the meaning can’t be fully erased.”
You hide from devils in your sleep. I smile at them in greeting.

It was becoming harder and harder to breathe around Takeshi, like her very air was his to claim. She lifted her gaze to the ceiling, but none of the angels stared back. As if they were telling her, “Good luck with that.”
Beware the woman scorned. She was more dangerous than any nuclear bomb.
Rain has never graced my skin, nor has lightning raised my hairs. In you, menacing storms extend their rapture.
“Kanes, you better not die tomorrow. I’ll only allow it when you can beat me in a fight.” The intensity in his expression stole her breath. “I doubt that would happen anytime soon,” she joked. “Possibly never.” “Exactly.”
“They’ve already forgotten where they came from and are perfectly content to sit around and eat bonbons while their neighbors struggle beneath their feet. Ignorance is their sword and shield.”
People were more inclined to sit at home and live in a screen versus worrying about climate change, declining resources, and mass extinction across different animal and plant lifeforms.
She understood then that prison had forever changed her. Because at that moment, Khalani wished she had poisoned the wine and killed them all.
Life was like poetry in that way. It was never meant to be shared alone.
“I know I shouldn’t say this, but your beauty is so overwhelming that it makes me ache. It’s more than physical. It’s who you are as a person. That’s how I know if your parents are anything like you, they are in heaven too.”
Pain was not something to cower from. Pain was a product of perseverance.
“For every scar visible on your body, I have to prevent myself from seeking out your assailants and slashing each one of their throats. I’ve watched you fight through every battle, despite the trials and tragedies you’ve faced, and it never ceases to astound me. Just staring at you right now makes me want to take you every way imaginable, and nothing about it is innocent.”
