AND SO OUR “family” was formed. Others stayed with us a day or a week, but these seven remained, the nucleus of our happy household. That it could have been happy, at such a time and in such circumstances, was largely a tribute to Betsie. Because our guests’ physical lives were so very restricted, evenings under Betsie’s direction became the door to the wide world.
