“Gotta pay tribute to my fraternity.” “Right,” I scoffed. “Alpha Yam Ergo.” Adrian nodded solemnly. “A very old and prestigious society.”
I’d been excused from classes for a “research trip.” The thing about being a star pupil was that none of my teachers had any problems with me skipping classes. They knew I’d get the work done. I probably could’ve taken the rest of the semester off.
In it, my family’s cat could talk, and he was driving Adrian’s Mustang. He asked me if I wanted to take a road trip to Birmingham. I told him I had a lot of homework to do but that if he wanted to go to Fargo, I’d consider it. We were in the middle of negotiating who’d pay for gas when the dream suddenly dissolved to blackness.
Wolfe, for reasons I would never be able to understand, kept a herd of Chihuahuas in his house. He’d once told us that they could kill a man upon a single command.
“Because I’m not the biggest fan of lilies.”
“Can you come over to Amberwood? I need you to help me break curfew and escape my dorm.” There were a few moments of silence. “Sage, I’ve been waiting two months to hear you say those words. You want me to bring a ladder?”
“You’re wearing your AYE shirt?” “Yeah, I never wage magical battles without—”
Our “family” was in danger of taking over Amberwood.
“Whatever happened to the dragon?” I mustered my primmest tone. “He has a name, you know.” Adrian pulled back and gave me a curious look. “I didn’t know, actually. What’d you decide on?” “Hopper.” When Adrian laughed, I added, “Best rabbit ever. He’d be proud to know his name is being passed on.” “Yes, I’m sure he would. Did you name the Mustang too?” “I think you mean the Ivashkinator.” He stared at me in wonder. “I told you I loved you, right?”
