Bonhoeffer himself took the lead very early on, giving a radio speech just days after Hitler’s election as chancellor in 1933. In it Bonhoeffer explained that the popular German idea of a strong leader—or Führer—was not based on God’s idea of leadership but on a mistaken idea that made an idol of the leader and that made him not a real leader at all but a misleader.
