“Just say yes and you’ll be everything to me forever, Allie.”
I wasn’t a hero. I wasn’t even the villain—I was the lesson. The final one she had to learn. You can love someone so much, and it still might not be enough. Sometimes, the truest form of love was forcing them to let you go.
“I didn’t take care of a lot of things, but I’d like to take care of you if you’ll let me,” I whispered. “I’d like to spend the rest of my life with you in the passenger seat of my truck. No photos, no other women, just you and me.” I swallowed, my stomach knotting. I think they called that shit butterflies. “Come with me, please.”
“How can I not love you when you’ve taught us the essence of the very word?” She sucked back a breath. “I don’t think loving you has ever been a choice for either of us, Allegra. And I know it hurts that he’s gone, but that pain is going to go away someday, and when it does, I’ll still be there.”
