Autistic behavior may prove to be a symptom of a variety of causes, much as epilepsy can be caused by a genetic defect in brain structure, a head injury, an infection, a tumor, or a stroke; or as dementia may be the result of Alzheimer’s, cerebrovascular degeneration, Huntington’s, or Parkinson’s.
