“I think I made a choice because I had to, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be afraid of what the choice means. It doesn’t mean that it’s a bad choice, just a little intimidating. It’s just going to take some time to settle in.
“My soft, sweet-smelling Yulenna.” His gaze goes distant. “You always know how to make me smile. Even after centuries.”
“I cannot watch you wither. It hurts me too much.” The god shudders violently, his hands covering his eyes. “Cannot watch the one I love age and die before me…”
You and your brother use me like you would a chamber pot, or a towel.” I spread my hands. “I am not a person to you. I am an object, and so you can have me…” I gesture at the whole of my body. “But you cannot have me.” And I gesture at my heart.
Just because I see something play out in front of me does not mean anything other than the fact that I have simply seen it. That is the problem. I see all and understand nothing.”
Ossev gazes down at me as if nothing else exists in the world. “Can I hold you while you sleep? Just to watch over you?”
“Not pregnant. I’ve stopped the cycle for you,” is what Neska says when I ask. “I didn’t like that it harmed you.”
“But you are both happy,” I point out. “Deliriously happy. He went to the Underworld to retrieve you from Rhagos’s clutches.” “That was pretty baller,” she agrees, a dreamy look on her face. “I’m going to have to remind myself of that the next time I want to choke him for being stubborn.”
“Then trust us,” Ossev says, his gaze bright upon me. “Trust us to tend to your heart as well as your body.”
“Our sweet Yulenna,” Neska murmurs, caressing my cheek with his knuckles as I settle against his legs. “We will not abuse your trust. Your heart is safe, now that we understand what a prize it is we hold.”
Perhaps I’m a naughty thing after all. But I’m their naughty thing, and that’s the best part.
“I think…it gives us a lot of time to cover the walls with spiderwebs.” I grin up at him. “Lots and lots of spiderwebs.”
