“It must be nice knowing what you’re going to do.” Wade ruefully thought back on his long stream of workplace mishaps. “After my dad passed, I got all ‘What’s the point?’ Now I just go from one job to the next.” Ember’s glow changed beside him. A little softer, more rose-hued.

The whole time Ember spoke, Wade listened quietly, tears welling up with compassion. What a horrible thing for a little kid to go through. To be told you weren’t the same as everyone else. He couldn’t even imagine facing something like that. “You must have been so scared,” he said. Ember looked at him in surprise. “Yeah. I was.” Her glowing eyes locked with his watery ones for a moment before she broke the connection.

Wade couldn’t explain it, but just knowing Ember made him feel like he had a purpose. He wanted to be there for her, to help her burn the brightest she could. He had been adrift for so long. It was nice feeling like he finally had a direction.

But Wade wasn’t going to be deterred. “They said you couldn’t go in there,” he insisted, pointing to another NO FIRE ALLOWED sign. “Why does anyone get to tell you what you can do in your life?”

“A Vivisteria.” Ember breathed. Her chest rose and fell with emotion. In that moment, she was five years old again: just a little spark who had read a poem and still thought the entire world was hers to explore.
