“The moment I laid eyes on you was the moment I knew I could never end your life.” My heart thrashed. “So you did plan to.” I hadn’t doubted it since learning of it—yet I’d wanted to. Even now, I so desperately wanted to. “I was always supposed to kill you, butterfly.” His dark lashes dipped, his thumb glossing my lower lip. “But now, I will bring you the remains of anyone who tries.”
“How astute you’ve grown, butterfly.” “No.” I flattened my palm over the glass and spread my fingers, ruining the scribbles I’d made. “The stupid was merely beaten out of me until my eyes opened properly.”
“Thank you.” He squeezed mine back. “If you tell anyone, I’ll make every meal you least desire for as long as I can get away with it.”
“My mate.” His eyes held mine as he licked my upper lip. “My wife.” He dragged his fingers free to rub my clit. “My fucking queen.”
“And how old were you when you learned?” “Twelve years.” I scoffed. “Of course.” “I am also a hands-on learner.” The purred words taunted and tested.
“Exquisite creature.” He nipped, then kissed my finger. “I don’t want your forgiveness.” Our lips grazed with the edged whisper. “I just need your surrender.”
“Due to my vast worldly experience, General, I’ve learned witch magic has a very specific reek to it,” Shole taunted. “As do you,” Fume grunted. “Now that would be the lack of a stick up my ass,” Shole said with a menacing grin. “Remove yours, and you might live a little more, too.”
Despite all I’d done, despite all she still refused to give me, it was me she’d materialized to. I was her place of refuge.
“That I’m so wretchedly in love with you, it’s both saved and damned me.”
Tullia stroked his neck to comfort him. He’d never been so spoiled. If this journey had taught me anything besides unbearable restraint and something resembling patience, it was that I could be jealous of a fucking horse.
“Kindly cease talking,” Florian said with that eerie calm. “It’s all you ever fucking do.”
I noted the dark patches of blood coating her stomach, hands, and face. Some of it had yet to dry. “Any of that yours?” She scoffed. “Don’t fucking insult me. My pride is still recovering from your giant toad’s audacity.”
Avrin studied me until a smirk finally fractured his facade. “Queen indeed.” At my scowl, he raised his hands and chuckled. Then he bent into a mocking bow. “Right away, Majesty.”
“A queen always rises for another, darling. And if they’re wise, only ever a queen.”
“As a good friend should.” Her hazel eyes widened comically. “Might cry now.” I laughed as she hollered to my back when I walked on. “I’ll be the best damned friend you ever had, changeling.”
My captor. My unexpected freedom. My home. “You owe me a wedding, husband.” He laughed, my hair scrunched in his fingers as he clutched me tighter.
“The food is truly far superior here.” “Your diet consists of cheese, nuts, and tea.” “Fine.” He pushed his spectacles farther up his nose and lifted it indignantly. “I miss my friend.” Victorious, I smiled, then seized his face to kiss his cheek. “I miss you, too.” “I didn’t say it was you,” he grumbled, yet he failed to hide his smile.
