What I believed didn’t matter. Caged within the arms of a king with frost for a heart, I was given the sole option he gave everyone. Complete surrender.
“I was always supposed to kill you, butterfly.” His dark lashes dipped, his thumb glossing my lower lip. “But now, I will bring you the remains of anyone who tries.”
“I wasn’t here until after his father and sister were gone, but I saw how their absence changed him.” Kreed glanced up at the sky. “In a way that made it seem like they’d taken his heart with them when they left. But you…”
“It’s as if you returned it to him, no matter how much he didn’t want it, and now he’s out of practice with something he has lived without for so long.”
“My mate.” His eyes held mine as he licked my upper lip. “My wife.” He dragged his fingers free to rub my clit. “My fucking queen.”
“That’s it, butterfly.” His lips and low laugh brushed my ear. “Drink my blood and take my seed, my fucking lifeforce, like the defiant yet greedy little creature you are.”
“Because never have I craved anything in all the ways I crave you.”
“I don’t want to be a warrior, Florian.”
Despite all I’d done, despite all she still refused to give me, it was me she’d materialized to. I was her place of refuge.
“If you wanted me on my back, all you had to do was say so, butterfly.”
“Nothing, not even death, will keep me from being the only one who can see to your greedy needs.”
“What is it you’re wanting me to see, Florian?”
“That I’m so wretchedly in love with you, it’s both saved and damned me.”
Shole’s expression was impassive, even as he said, “I’m afraid now is not the time for jealousy, your coldness.”
