“What did she say?” Holly asked. “That she’d like a bow with diamonds.” Holly shot Penelope a look. “Wouldn’t we all?” Penelope grinned. I like her.
She was too delicate, especially now, to endure learning that her son had been a raging alcoholic who had killed his wife. She’d known he wasn’t perfect, but she had no idea the depths of his sins.
She smiled, and I found that I wanted to make her smile like that every day, forever.
Not really. Penelope shrugged. Lily is a jerk because she’s got her own issues. We all do. They have nothing to do with you—you’re just her outlet. As long as she’s not going behind your back to make you look bad, you shouldn’t worry about it.
As much as I wanted to shuffle my family off to the corner like an embarrassed teenager, I was, in fact, an adult.
