Jen wanted to argue, to force them to admit that it was just a big joke they were playing on her, that they were making up the details to get a reaction. But there were no barely hidden smirks around the campfire. No eagerness or raised eyebrows. Just grim, unhappy honesty.

Occasionally they also got messages from Connor, along the lines of: I made friends with a cool bug. :)

Unlike me, it seemed to know the darkness intimately.

“If you don’t hear from us again, I want you to do what Bridgette said. I want you to forget about us. Live as though we never existed. Stick to your plans; get out of Doubtful. And don’t ever, ever regret anything that happened today. Because I won’t.”
