Those princes are ever foolish; they should have taught you to defend yourself.
Queen look dead-eyed and ghastly, and the presence of open-air windows everywhere—to be closer to the Above—means any torch is instantly snuffed out. Only the moon and stars light the chamber. She would find this whole place garish, I think.
Rosalina is there. She has no idea the danger they’ve put themselves in…
“When my brother banished me to the monastery, I knew I could rot, or I could grow. Like the ivy that strangles the dying tree, it was my duty to Spring to turn the minds of those clouded by corruption.”
“He understands how it feels to be the unloved child.”
“I could pass a thousand seasons staring at you and never have my fill of your beauty. I want you when the cherry blossoms fall in spring, and during the balmy nights of summer. I want you on a forest floor filled with autumn leaves and shivering in winter’s snow.”
“I find the scariest beasts aren’t the ones with teeth and claws, but the ones that hide behind a smile.”
“I have a mate.” His eyelids flutter, and a devastatingly handsome smile spreads on his face. “I know you do.”
“My mother used to tell me not to mourn the flower in bloom because you know one day it will wilt, for then you are forsaking its beauty.”
“Tonight, when you dance, look at the stars. Know that I’ll be looking at them, too, thinking of you.”
“She is nearly burned at the stake,” Rosalina whispers, “for choosing to love a man who could never belong to her.”
“Because a human can’t become what she wants.”
“I will never judge your past, Ez. I know who you are now, and I see who you are becoming. You can tell me anything.” And I feel it … The threads inside of me untangling, spreading out like petals on a breeze. I can trust her with my darkness, and she will shelter me.
As for Rosalina… This will only confirm for her the villain I am. But I told her I’d be her darkness, and if only a villain can save her, then so be it.
“Cas, do you have my necklace?” He tilts his head. “Yes. But they’ll only take it from you again. You don’t need it.” He places a hand over my heart. “You have everything you need right here.”
Rosalina holds my gaze for a moment, and I see it thundering within: a Spring storm ready to rage over anything soft and fragile. A look both frightening and beautiful. A rose covered in thorns.
The storm always passes.
“Fare,” he says, “we can’t control the fate of the stars.” “Who says we can’t?” A growl ripples through my words. “I know in my heart, in everything I am, that you belong with Rosie and me. And damn, I hope the stars are watching because I’m going to show them how much.”
“How did you get to me?” “There is nothing—nothing—that could keep me from you. No blood nor blade nor judgment cast upon me. I would tear my bones from the grips of death and offer a thousand more in my stead if it means you await me at the end of it all.”
“Then I’ll look everywhere,” I snap. “Either we all leave this capital or none of us do.”
