I swear, one look from him feels like an electric shock.”
Hayes reaches over the console and takes my hand in his.
want to hold her hand because she’s sad, and I want to make her feel better.
She’s a challenge, but she’s effortless.
I think it takes a big man to recognize when they’ve fucked up and the changes they’ve made to avoid making that mistake again.

She’s made me breathe.
“I woke up this morning feeling so happy that I almost didn’t trust it.”
“I trust you with my heart. You haven’t done anything to prove me differently. In fact, every chance you’ve had, you’ve protected me. You’ve put me and my needs first.
This is real because we’ve worked at it. You’ve worked at it.
I’m just going to be grateful for every minute she gives me.”
“I want to take care of you.”
“Everything that happens to you matters to me.”
He’s attentive.
He listens.

Soft and sure, there’s no question this man wants me and loves me. I can see it in his eyes, in the way he touches me, holds me . . . kisses me.
“How did you know that?” I ask. “Because I listen to you.”
Hayes would never hold me back. He’d never make me feel less than I am.
“Not looking to get in your pants, baby, just looking to show you how much I love you.”
Because someone who truly loves, who would do anything for you, would not hurl such painful knives at an open wound. That’s not love. That’s not fucking love.
Because that’s what love does. It stays. It protects. It fortifies.
